Lake Nakuru National Park gazetted in 1961 sits around Lake Nakuru at the flour of the rift valley near Nakuru Town.
Lake Nakuru is a soda ash lake that was famous for its hundreds of thousands of flamingos that nested on the shallow shores of the lake feeding on algae. However, since 2012 due to rising water levels that made it difficult for the flamingoes to move and feed on the algae and many have since relocated to other Lakes within the rift valley like Elmenteita, Simbi Nyaima and Bogoria.
Lake Nakuru National Park is great for its easy wildlife viewing. Black and white Rhinos were reintroduced in the 1990s and as of 2009 the population had grown to healthy population of more than 25 eastern black rhinos and 70 white southern rhinos. This is due to strict conservation efforts that included fencing off the park to keep out poachers rather than restrict wildlife movement.
Other wildlife regularly encountered include lions, cheetahs, leopards (common in recent years) buffalo, giraffes, hippos, waterbucks, among others.
The Park has excellent bird viewing opportunities with over 500 species recorded. Common species include the Greater and lesser flamingo, great white pelican, greater blue eared starling, hottentot teal, long crested eagle, African fish eagle among others
The best viewpoint of the rift valley lake and park is from Baboon Cliff escarpment.
